Scrubber dryer or sweeper: Which one do you need?
It’s a question we’re often asked here at Van Damme, and to be honest, the answer isn’t always what people expect. Because the difference between a scrubber dryer and a sweeper is greater than you might think! What’s more, choosing the wrong one means your floor will never be properly clean, no matter how long you spend cleaning it.
The difference in a nutshell
A sweeper removes coarse dirt and dust. A scrubber dryer removes ingrained stains, caked-on grease and embedded dirt. Both are indispensable, but at different times and for different reasons.
When should you choose a sweeper?
A sweeper uses brushes to direct dirt into a collection bin. No water, no cleaning agent – just dry sweeping over large areas.
This is the machine to choose if:
- your floor accumulates a lot of loose dust, sawdust, coarse dirt or small particles
- you want to maintain a large area quickly (warehouse, shed, hall)
- getting your floor wet is a problem (due to the risk of slipping or electrical installations)
- you want to give the floor a quick once-over every day or several times a day
In a joinery workshop, a warehouse with heavy pallet traffic or an outdoor area with sand and gravel, a sweeper is the logical choice. They are also ideal as a first step before you start thorough scrubbing: sweep away loose dirt first, then wet clean.
When should you choose a scrubber dryer?
A scrubber dryer, also known as a scrubber, uses water and cleaning detergent. The machine applies a film of water to the floor, brushes it in, and immediately vacuums up the dirty water. The result: a dry, clean floor in a single pass.
This is the machine to choose if:
- oil, grease or chemical products end up on your floor
- your floor has stains that won’t come off with a quick wipe
- hygiene is a requirement (food industry, pharmaceuticals, hospitals)
- your floor is polished, coated or tiled and needs to look its best
- you want to completely reset the floor after a production shift
A scrubber is the machine that tackles the real dirt. Not the visible dirt, but the ingrained grime that simply gets pushed around by sweeping. In a garage, a food processing plant or a production hall, this is indispensable.
What if you need both?
You’re not alone. In practice, many businesses need both: a sweeper during the day for quick maintenance, and a deep clean in the evening or once a week. This is precisely why combination machines are becoming increasingly popular.
A combined sweeping and scrubbing machine carries out both tasks in a single unit. This is handy if you’re short on space, if you don’t want to buy two machines, or if your staff prefer to work with just one machine. The downside is that such a combination machine is generally slightly slower than a conventional sweeper in ‘sweeping mode’ and slightly less powerful at scrubbing than a conventional scrubber-dryer when used intensively. But for most businesses, it’s the ideal compromise.
Ride-on or walk-behind?
Another choice that people sometimes overlook: do you want to walk behind the machine, or ride on it? That depends entirely on the area you need to clean.
- Walk-behind (compact machines): ideal for areas of around 1,500 to 2,000 m². Easier to manoeuvre in narrow aisles and around machinery.
- Ride-on models: for larger areas (warehouses, car parks, production halls covering several thousand m²). Faster and less physically demanding for the operator.
In short: for smaller, compact spaces, it’s best to choose a walk-behind machine, whilst larger areas benefit from a ride-on model.
Rent or buy?
Not every investment has to be a purchase straight away. If you only need a scrubber or sweeper occasionally – for a big spring clean, after a refurbishment, or whilst your regular machine is being repaired – then renting is a smart choice. You only pay when you’re actually using the machine, and you don’t have to worry about storage or maintenance.
Do you use the machine weekly or daily? In that case, buying is often more cost-effective, especially when you take the total long-term cost into account.
